Whitney Houston- Portrait- African American Art

Whitney Houston Portrait- African American Art

Hello again,

I have been working hard in the studio as you can see. I would be lying if I didn't tell the truth that this is really fun. Oh, yes its work but when the finished product is complete, what joy I have. This is another edition to the "Music Artists Series I (2009). This is actually the 4th one I've completed in this series.

This is is obviously Whitney Houston. Now, many people may not give her much respect due to her public life and marriage with former husband, R and B singer, Bobby Brown, but I have through this piece of art. I believe her personal business is just that-personal. I do not judge her and no one can deny what a awesome star she was and remains to be today.

I decided to paint Whitney Houston because she had such an impact on me growing up. She was one of the greatest female R and B, Pop artists in the 1980's and early 1990's. I know that many people love her still and this is a tribute to her because we honor her life in music and the gift of song she has graced us with. i believe she deserves to be honored even today as she has released her knew album this year:

New Art~Patti Labelle Black Art

New Art~Patti Labelle Black Art

Hello there!! Well, I have been very busy creating art for my new Music Artists' Series. Here we are again with a new painting of Ms. Patti Labelle.

She is one of my all time favorite female singers. She is a 'diva' in her own right and has won the right to be called 'Diva'.

So, I simply call this one, "Musical Diva". I hope you enjoy this one and remember there will be many more black art pieces to come.

Enjoy!

Luther Vandross Black Art Signifies Love

I want to thank everyone that has supported me since I started on this journey to create portraits of black music artists. I'm not sure how many I will create but it may be a huge collection before it is all over.

The reason why I chose Luther Vandross (portrait named: "My Luther") to be my first is because of how he showed the world about real love. I started listening to Luther Vandross long before anyone knew him. He used to do jingles on radio commercials and would sing background with other artists and no one knew who he was. There was one thing everyone could agree: "This man can really sing!" I literally own every album of his since his very first album, "Never Too Much". Actually I didn't own the album. My mother bought it and I played it out on her big console stereo. Later, I ended up with the album for myself! And from then on, I bought every album he's ever made.

What I loved about Luther was that he could reinvent himself every time through the change of times. Every album had his "Luther' signature sound but always new, fresh and with the current times.

So, you could imagine how I felt when he got really sick in 2003 but I was so happy he pulled through it. But a few years later, he struggled no more with the battle. We had lost him. I always thought I would just lose it. (I know you all probably are thinking, 'this grown woman is acting like a teenage groupie'.) Well, you see Luther introduced me, as many others did, to real soul music. I lived and breathed R and B and Soul music back then and his songs just helped make me realize what life and love was about. Some things you never forget about.. you know?

So, the reason why I chose to paint his portrait first was to release my love for him and what he gave to all of us: good music, good singing (great singing), and that love can be beautiful.

TinaMarie's 1st Black Art Portrait Online

TinaMarie's 1st Black Art Portrait Online

This is a very special day for me. As many of you may know, I spent most of my art career promoting and supporting other artists. I would paint and create projets at my leisure and was commissioned to produce art from friends and family. I have never posted any of my art online.

I started my art career in the 1980's when the internet was not popular. As many artists know, we made ourselves known through family, friends and presenting our work at galleries, art fairs and the like. Though this may seem really old to some of you, it is only new for me because its my first time ever presenting my work online in any fashion.

For the past 8 years, I've promoted other artists and supported their efforts in the art world. On my former website Expressive Visions.com, I featured many artists from all over the world on my website as well as offering FREE advertising to them. For over 5 years, I dedicated my art instincts and support to other African American artists because I love ethnic art.

Now is the time for me to embrace my talents once again and create art for others and not just those close to me.

What you see above is my very first portrait that I have recently completed of Luther Vandross, simply titled, "My Luther" . This is the first of many from my Music Artist Series. I had planned this series in 2007, but this happened to be the best time to start creating.

It is not for sale at this time but just wait and see what is to come. As my collection grows, I will post more and present them all on a brand new website. So, stay posted with what I am doing and feel free to tell me what you think.

If you have any requests for portraits for your own collection, please contact me at: exvigalleries@gmail.com.

Black Art Harlem Renaissance History

Song of The Towers (1934)Aaron Douglas was born in Kansas in 1898. He received a BA

in art from the University of Nebraska. He decided to pursue a career as an artist in

New York and earn his MA from Columbia University. Douglas

integrated African designs in his art work.

Into Bondage (1936)

Alain Locke called Aaron Douglas the "pioneering Africanist." Appropriately, he

designed and also illustrated Alain Locke's "The New Negro". In 1928, Aaron Douglas

became the Harlem Artists Guild's 1st president. This program successfully helped

African American artists obtain projects under the Works Progress Administration.

Later in his career, he moved to Nashville and founded the Art Department at Fisk

University and taught for 29 years.

"Precious" Movie- Piece of Black Art

Tyler Perry and Oprah presents... "Precious"- The Movie- A Piece of Art

I just received one of Tyler Perry's emails from his message board. He always sends updates on what he's doing or what he's grateful for and this one proves to do the same.

It talked about how he and Oprah will present a movie by Lee Daniels titled "Precious". It is a movie based on the very moving novel "Push" by Sapphire.

The Publisher's Weekly stated in parts about the novel, PUSH by Sapphire:

"...first novel, told from the point of view of an illiterate, brutalized Harlem teenager...Obese, dark-skinned, HIV-positive, bullied by her sexually abusive mother, Clareece, Precious Jones ...is pregnant for the second time with her father's child. (Precious had her first daughter at 12... Referred to a pilot program by an unusually solicitous principal, Precious comes under the experimental pedagogy of a lesbian miracle worker named, implausibly enough, Blue Rain. Under her angelic mentorship, Precious, who has never before experienced real nurturing, learns to voice her long suppressed feelings in a journal...."

If you know anything about Sapphire its of profound and moving words that allow you to relive your past pain but become redeemed from them as well.

I've always said: Our Past, Our Future
"We all must face our past in order to see our future. Without dealing with both, even the present doesn't exist." ~ Tina Phillips

When I saw the trailer, I knew this was a piece of art. It features Mo'Nique and Mariah Carey as celebrity starring roles. Also Mary J. Blige sings in the background as part of the soundtrack. Check it out here.

Art Institute Offers $2 Savings or Is It Really?

The Art Institute of Chicago, the second largest art museum in the U.S., is offering a $2.00 discount for Chicagoans. They are considering this discount at the same time of revealing their new Modern Wing in the Chicago Part District.

Though this may be some sort of savings in this recovering economy, it also comes at a time when proposed admittance fees at the museum will go up on May 23rd; which will be $18 for adults and with the discount, it will be $16. Childrens regular tickets are $12 and $10 for those living in the city of Chicago.

On May 16th, the Art Institute will open the Modern Wing to the Modern Wing. In this occasion, the museum will offer FREE admission to the Modern Wing between May 16-22.

The discount isn't really a discount but businesses seem to try to help the citizens out but they also have to find ways to keep things running.

Art Gallery Owner's Killer Found Guilty

Though this is not the norm in the art world, it must be told. A 52 year old man was found guilty of the murder of a Sarasota art gallery owner today. Mr. Elton Murphy was convicted by jurors in less than one hour for stabbing Joyce Wishart to death five years ago.

His sentence is life without parole.

Elton Murphy reportedly stabbed art gallery owner, Joyce Wishart 20 times at her prestigious gallery in Sarasota, Florida. Her gallery was located in the upscale art and theater district. Her body was mutilated and reportedly posed in a position like a woman in a painting in the gallery.

Oprah's FREE KFC Chicken Meal -Raincheck

As many of you know, Oprah offered on her show and website a FREE KFC Grilled Chicken Meal coupon earlier this week. Well, after such a phenomenal response to a recessed and eager America, many stores had to turn people away because they were overwhelmed and basically ran out of stock on the product.

NO worries. KFC plans to honor your coupon if you did not get a chance to use it (which the expiration date was 5/19/2009).

KFC says stated on Oprah's website: " We are so sorry, but due to the overwhelming response to our FREE Kentucky Grilled Chicken meal coupon, we can no longer redeem the free coupon at this time. But we will honor our commitment to giving you a free Kentucky Grilled Chicken meal. Please visit a participating KFC restaurant for a rain check form. Complete the form, attach your original coupon, and give it to the KFC restaurant manager or postmark per the form's instructions, by May 19, 2009, and we'll send you a rain check for your free Kentucky Grilled Chicken meal at a later date, plus a free Pepsi with our compliments. Your participating KFC restaurant will provide you with the form you need. Please note that the redemption periods of the rain checks will vary. All other terms and conditions of the original free Kentucky Grilled Chicken coupon will apply. Thank you for your understanding."
Roger Eaton
KFC President

So if you have not been able to use you FREE Meal coupon or was turned away, KFC has a slip for you to fill out and mail in to receive your FREE Meal. You can also call KFC at 1-800-CALL-KFC.

Ernie Barnes Leaves Black Art Legacy

Neo-Mannerist Artist Ernie Barnes passed this earth to his home on April 27, 2009. He was 70 years old. He suffered from a rare blood disorder that he succumbed to on that day.

He is best known for his ghost painting portrayed on 1970's TV sitcom "Good Times" and his famous piece of "Sugar Shack"; also used on Marvin Gaye's 1976 "I Want You" album.

He was born on July 15, 1938 in Durham, NC. Many people don't know that he was a professional football player. Later, he pursues his true love which was art. His figurative art portrayed athletes and people with the "elongated forms".

The world will miss this iconic African American artist of all time. RIP Mr Barnes.
