The beauty of art is that it's constantly evolving and being pushed to new heights with each new generation of artists. A crop of young black artists, in particular, deserve to be on your radar, adding immeasurably to the artistic dialog with their unique visions and techniques. We've already covered under-appreciated black actors as well as some of the greatest black fashion designers, but now it's time to show some love for talented young visual artists. 

Hailing from Nigeria to Tennessee, ranging from sculptors to photographers, these 20 to 30-somethings are well on their way to making names for themselves in the ultra-competitive world of visual art. Some have been blowing up for a while now, others have been getting attention at prestigious art fairs, and others are being selected for highly publicized events like an art exhibition curated by Shaq.

Hello again,

I have been working hard in the studio as you can see. I would be lying if I didn't tell the truth that this is really fun. Oh, yes its work but when the finished product is complete, what joy I have. This is another edition to the "Music Artists Series I (2009). This is actually the 4th one I've completed in this series.

This is is obviously Whitney Houston. Now, many people may not give her much respect due to her public life and marriage with former husband, R and B singer, Bobby Brown, but I have through this piece of art. I believe her personal business is just that-personal. I do not judge her and no one can deny what a awesome star she was and remains to be today.

I decided to paint Whitney Houston because she had such an impact on me growing up. She was one of the greatest female R and B, Pop artists in the 1980's and early 1990's. I know that many people love her still and this is a tribute to her because we honor her life in music and the gift of song she has graced us with. i believe she deserves to be honored even today as she has released her knew album this year:

We, at ExViGalleries have had a vision to open an art gallery for over 3 years now. With the declining economic reality in our world today, it is becoming a dream even harder to reach. Not only is it difficult to get artists involved as well as investors due to the economy but it is a strain to keep basic things up and running like this blog. We have struggled even maintaining this free blog with declining funds to keep internet access paid for.

When we started our vision to open an art gallery in 2005, it was an alive and bright vision. We gained much support from local and artists abroad interested and whom benefited from our free resources on our website. Some of those things were free advertising, free artist profile and art displays, art sales on our website and recognition from our organization for artists.

We we awarded 2008 "Most Original" website from Black Web Awards and other awards alike. Many of our visitors and artists friends supported us with acquiring these awards and we have been very grateful for the support.

I have interviewed over 50 artists last year for their possible spot in the gallery. Many of the artists are very disappointed of the setback with of course affects their livelihood as well.

I ask all of our visitors, viewers and friends to please support this vision. We have not been able to post on this blog due to the decline of business and support.

We want to make 2009 a great year and be able to provide those free services and the art gallery in coming year of 2010.

If you can give from your heart and support the arts and this ethnic art gallery vision, it would be greatly appreciated.

How Tyler Perry Inspired Me to Keep My Dream for Black Art Gallery

When I saw a clip from Tyler Perry's studio opening I was truly inspired. He has always inspired me to the core with his movies, plays and now the studio opening. He has such a vision for success and not just the success for himself but to help lift up new and up and coming Black actors of African American decent. He gets a lot of flack about his style of characters like "Madea" but the christian basis for his films and plays is what makes a profound impact on me.

Tyler Perry is not ashamed or afraid to praise God through is work because he knows from whence he's come. The Bible says that Jesus told His people: "If you are ashamed of me, I'll be ashamed of you". Through and through, He's never comprised his love and faith in God for the fame and wealth he acquires. I sure hope he remains as humble as he continues to move up because whether people really want to admit it or not, this is why many people love his work.

The reason why love Tyler Perry so much is because he reminds me of myself. My childhood may have been different from his, but I live everyday of my life in dedication to God. I want to open my art gallery on for me and for status and fame, but for other African American artists that need a place that we can call our own. I have been an artists for over 30 years but I want to expose the passions of black artists in my gallery because I love the culture of our art so much.

My work and life is the foundation of a solid rock that I can not deny or ignore. When I heard about Tyler Perry making negotiations with Hollywood about whether he can mention the word "Jesus" in his sitcom "The House of Payne", I wasn't surprised. Hollywood wants to make and mold African Americans as well as everyone else to change their art form into what they want. Would a person sell their soul, just to please Hollywood? Well, Tyler wouldn't budge. He decided not to make a deal until he could settle under his terms. And as you know, he agreed on terms he could live with on the TBS network. (If you haven't noticed, he uses the word "Jesus" and other christian terms on his show).

This is something that I would not compromise as well. There is nothing that would make me abandon my Savior.

So, Tyler Perry with his beautiful studio ground has inspired me to do more with my life and my dreams. There is no reason why anyone can't make their dreams dome true if they really want them to exists.

I found out that Bay Area Chef Jeff Toney will be providing appetizers (gourmet style) for guests of the African American  art "crushed" opening reception with April Banks on October 19th 5-8pm. Oakland Artist- April Banks at Guerilla Cafe

April Banks' Oakland African American artist at Guerilla Cafe

I just got news about an extraordinary bay area black artist from my hometown, Oakland that is doing some great things in Cali. I visited her website and viewed all of her work. Oakland is known for many extraordinary black artists and African American art. I especially liked the her "Chocolate" series which was on display as the "Free Chocolate" exhibition at in the city of San Francisco, Ca. 

Now she'll be doing a piece for Guerilla Cafe' in Berkeley. Her name is April Banks. This is what her opening reception is all about and described as:

{"crushed" is an installation of manipulated paper by Oakland artist, April Banks. She uses crushed, torn, sewn and folded paper to create undulating and amorphous forms.}

Guerilla Cafe will have another one of their 'cafe originals' for African American artists and here are the details:

My good friends over at Jamaicans.com have a great website full of black artists from Jamaica. I have subscribed to a great Jamaican newsletter at Jamaicans.com  and I always get the best and freshest black art news on whats happening at the island to its technological world.

They do so much in the line of exposure for not only Jamaican artists but black artists they do business with. they are very informed and forthright about African American issues and how African American artists are affected.

I received information about some new posters they have advertised.

I checked out the website and there's some great posters and black art work of Bob Marley, Landscape, Beaches and People.  

If you like Jamaica and its culture of black art, see what wonderful things they have.

It will literally make you feel like you are right there soaking up the sun and love of Jamaica.

Extraordinary Black Art Gallery to Open 2010!

We are so excited to announce to you that an extraordinary art gallery featuring African American artists will be built soon- tentatively in Fall 2010.

Founder, President and Black Artist, Tina M. Phillips of Expressive Visions and now Ex Vi Galleries is very thrilled to have this come to existence. She is an African American woman who has studied and loved art for most of her life.  

She wants "black artists from coast to coast to be able to exhibit their expressive visions and talents that God has given them". Ms. Phillips wants to change the way America sees African American Art. She believes African American art in general that it is not given its due credit or praise that it deserves.
